The cure for scabies included medical treatments with creams or lotions such as lindane permethrin crotamiton and sulfur ointment. The children under the age of two should only be treated with permethrin sulfur ointment and crotamiton.
Lindane is usually used as a secondary treatment and not recommended for babies older adults and individuals under 110 pounds or individuals with a weak immune system. People with widespread dermatitis or women that are breast-feeding or pregnant should not use lindane. It must be used strictly as directed in a single application. It is a shampoo and lotion.
Lindane 1% is to only be used as directed as it has dangerous side effects that can be avoided with following the directions strictly. This is only used in the severe cases when the other forms of medications do work effectively. This powerful medication needs to be used with caution since when it is used incorrectly or overused; it can be very dangerous by permanently damaging the central nervous system.
Permethrin cream 5% is the common first treatment for scabies. This powerful cream usually cures the scabies with the first application.
Sulfur precipitate sulfur 5% to 10% is less effective than permethrin and lindane often used for pregnant or nursing mothers and babies. It is milder than the other two options.
The oral medication Ivermectin is a commonly used treatment for scabies in the United States in conjunction with other treatments with severe cases of scabies.
When the scabies is crusted referred to as Norwegian scabies that is rare it often requires numerous treatments with more than one form of medication. This type of scabies is rare but often is complicated to cure quickly.
If any of the medications are not taken properly they will fail in curing scabies. The medication needs to kill the scabies eggs to effectively prevent new infestation. It is important to know that all members of the household will need to be treated for scabies if one member has the infestation. If not everyone is treated the outbreak will continue even with individual that have been treated.
