Scabies symptoms
The symptoms of scabies include itching that progress to excessive itching and irritated skin with reddening in the affected areas. The scabies will only get worse without treatment and until the mites are killed to cure the scabies.
The itching generally is the first symptom you will experience. The itching will often start within three weeks of exposure to scabies if it is your first time being exposed to the mites. You will begin by feeling itchy after baths or during the nighttime. Most people tend to believe the itching is due to dry skin so they will overlook the real cause and apply moisturizer to hopefully elevate the itching but it will not work. In young children and older adults the itching is often very intense and irritating.
Due to the itching the skin becomes irritated with a rash or red spots followed by skin sores sometimes having the appearance of tiny red fine lines in the skin. This is due to the mite burrowing through the upper layers of the skin as it tunnels deeper into the skin to lay the eggs.
Sometimes the mite is visible and appears as a small black dot in the skin sore. This occasionally happens when the mite is exposed within the blister or sore. When you scratch the fine lines may seem to disappear yet the mite is still inside the skin. With young babies and scabies they will have red inflamed skin with small blister like sores.
You will experience redness on the areas of the bites. Some people form blisters small open sores and red lines where the mites have tunneled under the skin. The blisters and open sores will be crusty as the skin tries to naturally heal.
If the itching becomes persistent it advised to seek medical attention. When you make an appointment with the physician they will want to know about your itching if you have any spots if you have been exposed to anyone with scabies and if you are taking any over the counter medications that may mask some of the signs or symptoms. Always call the physician if you have itching for more than four days that increases in frequency.
