Scabies treatment

Treatment for scabies can involve seeking a physicians treatment or using over the counter mediations that both effectively treat the irritating little mites. Delaying the treatment will only increase the health risks and the opportunities to spread the infectious mites to other people. Scabies will not disappear by itself and requires treatment in all cases.

The medical treatments prescribed are in creams and lotions. They are spread over the entire area of the body to kill the mites. The lotions and creams can be used on infants but only on the neck scalp and face and is to be washed off within eight to fourteen hours after applying. Young children in daycare or school are allowed to return to the facilities after their treatment that generally takes one to three days depending on the form of treatment selected.

Physicians will require a check up in two or four weeks after the completion of treatment to verify the treatment was effective. For the persistent cases of scabies injections of steroids will be used to kill the mites and in extreme cases coal tar products are used in the affected areas.

It is quite common to experience continual itching for fourteen days after treatment. This is due to the skin healing yet if during this time the skin appears to have new red spots or bumps the treatment was not effective and it is necessary to resume treatment immediately.

Some of the treatments used to reduce the itching include taking antihistamines like Benadryl to reduce the allergic reaction to the mites. In severe cases steroids are prescribed to help with the itching and swelling due to the itching of the scabies. The reason people itch and swell is they are having allergic reactions to the mite that has embedded in their skin. With treatment the allergic reaction will diminish and disappear completely.
